Spinal Orthotics

Spinal orthotics are manufactured to address a variety of back and neck concerns.

At Tierney Orthotics and Prosthetics, we work in conjunction with physicians and surgeons to provide spinal orthotics for patients who need added support after an injury, surgery, or for ongoing rehabilitation, as well as for conditions where pain relief is the objective. Spinal orthotics are manufactured to address a variety of back and neck concerns based on the affected area of the spine. Here are some key terms related to spinal orthotics.

  • TLSO – Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Orthosis: A TLSO can be helpful for supporting the thoracic and lumbosacral areas of the spine. Thoracic region of the spine includes 12 vertebrae just under the cervical spine that make up the upper and mid back region. Lumbar region of the spine includes 5 vertebrae that are in the lower back region. Sacral vertebrae consist of 5 sacral vertebrae bones that are fused together to form the sacrum. This orthotic is most used for multiple region spinal fractures, osteoporosis, scoliosis, kyphosis, and herniated discs.

  • LSO – Lumbar Sacral Orthotic: An LSO is used to support and immobilize the lumbar spine (5 vertebrae just under the thoracic spine that make up the low back region) and can be helpful with treating low-back pain caused by disorders and injuries. This orthotics are most used after lumbar spinal surgery, to treat lower back pain, extensive arthritis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. The type, either a rigid brace or soft brace, is determined based on whether movement is to be allowed or restricted.

  • SO – Sacroiliac Orthotic: An SO provides flexible pelvic-sacral support and reduces motion about the sacroiliac joint, which is a common source of chronic low back pain with either sacroiliitis or sacroiliac joint dysfunction involved.

By working with your physician, we can provide the appropriate spinal orthoses for your condition, injury, and treatment plan. Back pain is more common than many people believe, but it is also treatable in many instances. Spinal orthotics can be helpful with back arthritis, spondylitis, bulging or slipped discs, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, kyphosis treatment, pregnancy pain, pulled & strained back muscles, sciatica, spinal stenosis, spine compression fractures, spondylolisthesis, and SI joint pain, just to name a few. Whether you need post-operative stabilization, rehabilitative care, or ongoing pain relief, we want to help with spinal orthotics that will improve your quality of life.
