How quickly or easily that hinge swings is typically controlled by friction, or by a hydraulic or locking mechanism. Microprocessor knees, on the other hand, use computer chips to control their mechanisms and allow you to achieve a more stable and efficient gait. The addition of microprocessors also allows the prosthetic knee joints to be more complex, which in turn allows you to more closely mirror a natural walking pattern.
