Here at Tierney Orthotics & Prosthetics, we want to help you get the assistive devices you need to live your healthiest and best life. One of the many types of products we offer is spinal orthotics, or back braces, which provide support for a variety of conditions and help your spine maintain its correct alignment. These devices can be used to treat a variety of conditions, and in this article, we’ll be going over a few examples so that you can get a better idea of whether spinal orthotics can benefit you.

Conditions That Can Benefit from Spinal Orthotics

  • Kyphosis- Kyphosis is an exaggerated, forward rounding of the back. It can occur as a result of malformation of the spine in children and teens, or occur as a result of age in older adults. Depending on the specific nature of a patient’s kyphosis, spinal orthotics may be used to prevent the curvature from getting worse.
  • Scoliosis- Another issue that is typically treated with spinal orthotics is scoliosis, or a sideways curvature in the spine. This condition most often develops during the growth spurt just before puberty, with the spine drifting out of alignment as the adolescent grows. The right back brace can help prevent the curvature from getting worse, and can also bring the spine back into proper alignment, or close to it, over time.
  • Muscle Strain- Spinal orthotics can also help treat injuries or their symptoms. For instance, if you have sprained or strained the muscles in your back, the right orthotics can help support those muscles as they recover, preventing you from re-injuring yourself and reducing your levels of pain.
