If you have suffered from a long-term injury, your activity level has probably (and understandably) been reduced over time. Bracing can give you the support and confidence you need to again enjoy activities like walking, hiking and more. Historically, medical bracing has been made from a variety of materials. Most recently, plastic has been a go-to material, but it can have challenges like bulkiness and stretching or changing shape over time.
Now there is a new option – custom carbon bracing. Custom carbon bracing can be specifically designed for you – for your weight, your height and even your unique muscular structure. It offers these benefits and more:
- Strength and durability: If you are looking for a long-term solution to your bracing needs that allows you to have a more normal gait, carbon may be the answer you need. It can increase both your speed and strength during regular activities.
- Lightweight and flexibility: Bracing needs to aid function, but it also has to be comfortable, so you want to wear it. Carbon is significantly lightweight compared to other material options, and carbon fibers can be woven into other materials to create optimal flexibility.
- Less fatigue over time: Carbon can increase the springback of your bracing, meaning that you don’t have to use as much energy as you move in the brace, and reduces your fatigue over time.
Custom carbon bracing can be designed with a flat footplate that allows you to add other custom orthotics or custom shoes, but it is not the right choice for everyone. It is not usually the recommended option for those with knee hypertension, spasticity or significant deformities.
