Whether from a disease, injury, or physical abnormality, orthotics can provide much-needed support and stability to help you increase your daily function. Like any medical device, custom orthotics are an investment, and with proper care and maintenance, you can make yours last for many years.

Wearing and Caring for Your Custom Orthotics

Here are our top tips for wearing and caring for your new orthotics:

  • Wipe down your orthotics with soapy water and a cloth after every few wears. Never immerse your orthotics completely in water, and always dry them completely before putting them on again.
  • Never put your orthotics in a washing machine to clean them. Also avoid putting your orthotics in hot water.
  • Keep your orthotics away from any sources of heat.
  • Do not let your orthotics come into contact with any type of lotion or skin creams.
  • Check your orthotics regularly for any signs of wear and tear. If your orthotics are not usable, do not try to wear them. Call us as soon as possible to have us fix your orthotics.

If you are new to wearing orthotics, start wearing them gradually and then work up to wearing them for several hours a day. For most of our patients, we recommend starting with one to two hours of wear every day and then working up from there.
