What Kids and Parents Need to Know About Pediatric Prosthetics

People of all sizes and ages need prosthetics, and our team at Tierney Orthotics and Prosthetics is here to provide them. We have particular experience in working with kids and parents to provide pediatric prosthetics for children who have lost limbs or who were born without them. In this article, we’ll go over some key things parents and kids need to know about pediatric prosthetics.

Pediatric Prosthetics Restore Function – The first thing to know about pediatric prosthetics is they are designed to restore limb function. While a prosthetic can’t fully replace the functionality of a lost limb, they can get pretty close, and with a prosthetic, your child will be able to participate in many more activities than they could without one. Encourage your child to view their prosthetic as a tool that lets them do more, rather than as a sign of a limitation.

• Children Outgrow Pediatric Prosthetics – Another important thing for both you and your child to know about pediatric prosthetics is that they’ll outgrow them over time. It’s important to make sure your child always has a well-fitting prosthetic, as using one that’s too small can cause your child pain and lead to musculoskeletal issues.

• Your Child’s School is Required to Accommodate Them – When parents bring their kids to us for pediatric prosthetics, many of the parents worry about whether they’ll be able to get accommodations for their child at school. We want you to know that schools are required by law to accommodate children with limb differences. Your child is entitled to a fair and equitable education. To get the accommodations your child needs, you’ll need to contact the faculty to work out a plan, but everyone at the school should be on board with providing this support.
